Training

This section will look at some of the training exercises and demonstrations carried out in Suffolk. Although War Diaries a full of details of training exercises, mostly only the narrative and operational details of the exercise are present, the outcome and conclusions drawn from the exercise often lacking. Only those exercises with full details will be described. As there is also very little detail in War Diaries on basic platoon and company training, these areas are also not covered in this section. Some basic details on Exercises, Umpiring, Battle Drill and Battle Training Grounds are given.

These exercises give a valuable insight into British Army tactics. No attempt will be made to draw conclusions as to the effectiveness of training in the British Army – this has already been done far better that I could ever hope to – see T H Place’s “Military Training in the British Army, 1940-1944”.
